Scoliosis, a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine, has been a focus of my practice for many years. While there are various treatments available, one that has shown promise and effectiveness in our Posture Clinic is Neuromuscular Re-education. This approach aims to retrain the muscles and nerves to work in harmony, promoting a more aligned and functional spine.
In this article, I’ll go into detail on how Neuromuscular Re-education can be applied specifically for scoliosis treatment.
Neck and Shoulder Curve:
The cervical spine, which comprises the neck, plays a pivotal role in our overall spinal health. An aligned neck can influence the alignment of the entire spine.
Using a Weighting System to Establish Curve in the Neck:
- By strategically placing weights around the neck area, we can encourage the spine to adapt and realign. This weighting system provides a gentle yet consistent reminder for the neck to maintain its natural curve, aiding in the correction of any misalignments.
Shoulder Weight – Adjusting Side-to-Side Curve:
- The shoulders, being closely connected to the cervical spine, can also influence the curvature of the upper spine. By using shoulder weights, we can subtly adjust the side-to-side curve. This method helps in balancing the shoulders, which in turn can have a positive effect on the neck and upper spine.
Levelling the Pelvis:
The pelvis is the foundation of our spine. A misaligned pelvis can lead to a cascade of postural issues, including scoliosis.
Using Hip Weights:
- Just as we use weights for the neck and shoulders, hip weights can be employed to encourage a more aligned pelvis. These weights provide a gentle nudge, prompting the hips to adjust and level out.
De-rotating the Pelvis to Level It Off:
- Rotation or twisting of the pelvis is a common issue I’ve seen in scoliosis patients. By de-rotating the pelvis, we aim to level it off, creating a more stable base for the spine. This not only aids in reducing the scoliotic curve but also promotes better posture and reduces strain on the lower back.
Neuromuscular Re-education is a promising approach to scoliosis treatment. By understanding the intricacies of the spine and using targeted interventions like weighting systems, we can guide the body toward better alignment and function. If you or a loved one is grappling with scoliosis, consider exploring Neuromuscular Re-education as a potential treatment avenue. Your spine is the pillar of your body; let’s ensure it stands strong and aligned.
